Call for cities: Join the Smart City Challenge!

FinEst Centre for Smart Cities collects complex urban challenges from cities to create smart and science-based solutions for them in cooperation with researchers and developers.

Our recent webinar, held on August 23, opened its doors to cities interested in submitting their challenges to the 3rd round of Smart City Challenge.

We were delighted to see various cities joining us and showing interest for solving their urban challenges!

Guidelines and expectations clarified

The webinar’s primary objective was to provide cities with clear and comprehensive guidelines on how to submit their urban challenges.

Understanding that the success of the Smart City Challenge is based on well-defined challenges and readiness to commit to the whole process, our aim was to ensure that cities feel well-prepared to present their challenges.

Submit your challenges by September 30!

The challenge that needs to be solved can be related to energy efficiency, modern mobility solutions, urban greenery, citizens’ well-being, waste management or some other similar area.

  • We are waiting for all cities and municipalities who want to solve their urban problems in an innovative, science- and data-based way to submit their challenges by September 30.
  • Cities interested in participating can submit 1-3 challenges for consideration by emailing us at smartcity@taltech.ee. We kindly ask to use this form.

These challenges will be the foundation upon which a team of experts and researchers will partner with cities to launch 4 pilot projects in November 2024.

Inspiration from Stavanger, Norway

We were also happy to welcome an inspirational guest speaker from the City of Stavanger, Norway. The Interim Head of Smart City of Stavanger, Jens Otto Skåra Hansen, shared their experiences and insights on setting up a smart city roadmap and adjusting it according to the needs.

Our guest speaker added a valuable international perspective to the discussion, and hopefully Stavanger’s approach to smart city challenges offered a fresh lens through which cities could envision their own transformative journeys.

You’re welcome to watch the recording of the webinar below.
