Light Touch for Smart Cities

2.1 Patented IoT Technology.
Huna has developed and patented a new and more efficient technology, based on a new method of communication based on impulses between i) Light Buddy, a device in the electrical cabinet engineered by Huna, and ii) Light Mate, a 10 cm device engineered by Huna as well, installed in the luminaire.

i) Light Buddy reduces the total amount of operating hours and constantly monitors the correct electrical operation of street lighting networks;
ii) Light Mate allows to precisely and dynamically adjust the light intensity emitted by the lighting fixtures, enabling greater operational flexibility and savings compared to traditional virtual midnight systems. The average energy saving of such a technology amounts to 22%, with peaks of even 50% (on top of the normal saving brought by LEDs).

The Light Buddy communicates with the Light Mate thanks to voltage impulses on the same power cables of luminaires.

The communication between Light Buddy and Light Mate is activated only when the delivery of a new working program is needed; that’s why the communication doesn’t need to be active permanently. Moreover, Light Mates keep on working even when the Light Buddy is offline or faulty.

Finally, the simplicity of the system combined with the simple but effective engineering of the devices, has led to a 50% cut of the cost of the devices themselves; leading to a payback time of 4 years and a ROI of 66%.

2.2 Digital Platform

The digital platform is made of three functionalities: Design, Management & Maintenance, Remote Control.

2.2.1 More specifically, a digitized management and maintenance with Light Touch automatizes the delivery of day-to-day operations as well as a constant awareness about the status of streetlighting through real time data.

2) the Management & Maintenance simplifies the reporting of activities; the planning of on-site interventions; the sharing of activities among different stakeholders, by giving access to multiple users (the local government, the utility – if any, maintenance technicians, subcontractors, etc); the communication between the on-field and office staff thanks to a proper messaging system.

2.2.2 Remote Control, besides the dimmering of luminaires (22-50%), enables the local government and/or the utility company to detect outages immediately and give a prompt and effective maintenance response, reducing the downtime. This way, the city delivers its citizens, whether they are drivers, pedestrian or cyclist a service of excellence, without impacting them by lack of safety (traffic or physical) and preventing microcriminality.

2.3 EyeLight

On top of Light Touch, Huna has developed another patented solution for public lighting: EyeLight.

EyeLight is a network of mobile sensors installed on a fleet of vehicles (ideally, fleets for public transport such as trams, buses, waste collection) monitoring and collecting data about the ground illuminance of lampposts.

Huna has obtained the patent for EyeLight in May 2023, with n. 102021000009704. The extension at the European level is ongoing.

2.4 EVywhere (EV Charge)

EVywhere is a startup founded by the venture builder Corporate Hangar. EVywhere deploys a cost effective, low power and low impact solution to increase EV charging points, to enable utilities in reaching the promised targets of installed charging points and enabling more EV purchases.
