Today food waste is transported to the mainland, causing the environmental footprint in logistics and leaving the island without respective resource. On the other side, Saaremaa foresees the potential for aquaculture and poultry farms, after offshore windfarms help bringing the energy costs down and provide steady supply of clean electricity. The feed has been imported, the energy prices too high so far for the farming sector and feed production locally. Food waste is a perfect raw material for growing insects (such as black larvae flies), to farm them in reactors for a protein-rich feedstock for fish and chicken. Leftovers of farms provide the source of biogas production currently planned in Saaremaa and consist of a potential for enriching the vertical greenhouses – another direction on islands to provide jobs and local food all-year-around.
