The proposed solution is based on several components:
- Creation of a web platform where citizens can upload photos
- Creation of a web frontend for (university) HPC clusters for easy data processing using open-source Structure-from-Motion and GIS software as well as point-cloud processing tools
The main problem for small cities is the cost of commercial 3D capture and modeling solutions, where both, the software and the photogrammetric or LiDAR capture process are costly. The creation of an easy-to-use frontend and glue combine open-source software tools will solve the issue of costly software. The second aspect is the involvement of the citizens in creating the photo sets, this encourages interaction and exploration of their city and makes a costly capture process obsolete.
