20 urban challenges are waiting for solution ideas

Discover the latest in our Smart City Challenge journey and what’s next.

We’re on a mission to innovate and tackle complex urban challenges, making our cities more sustainable and livable. Exciting opportunities await researchers, developers, and cities to collaborate and shape the urban future.

Submit your solution ideas by November 30!

During the 3rd round of the Smart City Challenge we have collected urban challenges, cities have indicated the importance for them, and now we are collecting solution ideas for 20 selected challenges.

41 cities/counties and campuses from 11 countries proposed challenges in circular economy, environment, mobility, people-centered city, city planning, and energy.

Solution ideas for those challenges are expected from researchers, developers, and urban experts.

Piloting progress: On the road to launching four pilot projects

Our aim is to start four pilot projects in November 2024:

  • Two large projects: 36 months, budget ~ 1.25mln euros each.
  • Two mid-sized projects: 24 months, budget ~ 820,000 euros each.

At least one piloting city from Estonia and one from another country needs to participate in each project.

Benefits for researchers to participate

Through Smart City Challenge we support cities in addressing complex urban challenges.

Engaging in our pilot projects offers an array of advantages for researchers:

  • Comprehensive coverage of pilot development and piloting costs.
  • Opportunity to test your research results in real urban settings.
  • Possibility to develop innovative solutions with international market potential.
  • Benefit of working within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Access to valuable data for long-term research needs.
  • Being part of the FinEst Centre’s international community of smart city experts.

Be part of the solution! How to join?

We are inviting you to submit research-based solution ideas to address challenges that cities are facing.

These ideas will be considered by cities, and if moving on to the next phases, developed and piloted in urban environments within a specified timeframe.

The goal is to create solutions with significant scalable business potential, that can meet the real needs of cities across different countries.

Joining the team:

  • Whether you’re a member of the current FinEst Centre for Smart Cities team or a researcher from Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), you’re welcome to propose ideas and participate in the pilot projects.
  • If you’re a researcher outside of TalTech or a company’s representative, we invite you to collaborate with TalTech’s researchers. We can help you find the right contacts to formulate your solution.

Submit your knowledge-based solution ideas by November 30, 2023, to smartcity@taltech.ee using the “Proposing solution idea to the city challenges by researchers and developers” template (no signature required).

While we don’t evaluate the submitted ideas, they should attract cities, that recognize the significance of your solution in addressing their challenges, and encourage willingness to start a pilot project.

We will publish proposed solution ideas on our homepage on December 2.

On December 13, we will host a (hybrid) seminar where submitted ideas will be introduced. The aim is to introduce the initial proposed ideas to cities and engage in discussions to start forming initial piloting teams. See more info and register here.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Külle Tärnov, Head of Innovation and Smart City Challenge coordinator in FinEst Centre for Smart Cities.

The pilot projects are 100% financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research.
