European Data Space for Smart Communities

European Data Space for Smart Communities is a deployment action for the creation of a data space for smart communities as an enabler of the EU Green Deal goals and Sustainable Development Goals.

The preparatory action for a Data Space for Sustainable and Smart Cities and Communities (DS4SSCC) laid the foundation for current project.

Emphasizing sustainability aspects and diversity in communities, DS4SSCC developed a multi-stakeholder data governance scheme, created a blueprint for the European DS4SSCC, delivered priority datasets, developed a roadmap towards a mature data space for smart communities and cities, and implemented the data space on various governance levels.

Project’s main objectives

European Data Space for Smart Communities aims to create a large-scale cross-sectoral data space for smart communities in the EU and advance its implementation to support policy priorities of cities and communities.

The aim is also to validate the governance and technical blueprint developed by the preparatory action through 10-12 cross-sectorial & cross-border pilot projects. The pilots will validate the blueprint in real use to deliver a sustainable European data space.

The pilot call is specifically designed for local public administrations in the EU and the industry (company, academia, NGOs) working with them.

FinEst Centre’s role in the project

FinEst Centre for Smart Cities is responsible for leading work package “Open Calls” and is therefore in charge of planning, launching, conducting, and selecting the project pilots through an open call for pilots with three cuts for evaluation.

FinEst Centre is also leading the process of writing Data Space Position Paper – document describing the role of the DS4SSCC within the federated data space environment.

Project’s duration is 36 months, from October 2023 to September 2026, and it is led by Technical University of Denmark.
