Next steps for Smart City Challenge 2024 pilot project proposal

Welcome to the next phase of the Smart City Challenge 2024! As we enter the 4th round, here are the key steps for cities, researchers, and company representatives to submit their pilot project proposals.

You can use “Action plan of pilot projects” as a basis for your planning. You don’t have to submit an action plan yet, but it might be useful for the next steps. You can also see the selection criteria for the maximum of 9 ideas for the final round. You can consider the criteria for submitting your pilot project proposal.

Both mentioned topics with more details can be found on Smart City Challenge 2024 page under “Want to know more?”.

Finetune the smart city solution ideas and work together with partners on your pilot project proposal. Conclude the idea on maximum six pages on the application form. Send it to smartcity@taltech.ee by November 15, 2024.

Steps before submitting your pilot project proposal

Next steps for cities:

Explore submitted solution ideas.

Select the ideas you wish to pilot in your city and, if proven successful, integrate them into your long-term plans. See the ideas and connect the authors HERE.

Next steps for researchers, developers, and company representatives:

Find partner cities.

  • Find at least one city from Estonia and one from another country willing to pilot your idea and, if successful, adopt it on a long-term basis. We recommend to involve more cities in the beginning, and it’s possible to make the final selection of pilot project partner cities in the spring.
  • Find relevant city contacts HERE.

Assemble your team.

  • Gather a dynamic research and development team, ensuring a blend of technical and business development expertise.
  • NB! You need researchers from Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) to compile the team. If you need assistance finding the relevant people at TalTech, please send a short and specific information about who you are looking for in English to kulle.tarnov@taltech.ee.

Collaboration with companies.

  • We are happy to work with companies that are eager to become the commercialisation partner of the solution created after the pilot project.
  • It’s important to notice that we cannot finance salary or other direct costs of the companies. We can cover the salary costs of researchers doing the development work and carrying out the piloting and city experts and other direct piloting costs. See more under Financing section.

On September 25th we hosted a workshop that focused on introducing the proposed smart city solution ideas.

You can (re)watch the recording of the whole day or specifically the part that you’re interested in (see the timestamps under the video in Youtube).
