Introducing recent addition to FinEst Centre research community – Lorenzo Viva

Lorenzo is a landscape architect and urban planner from Lecce, Italy – a city close to the south-east coast of Italy. He has recently joined the FinEst Centre team for six months, however, using the opportunity of modern technologies and the Centre’s flexible arrangement, and working mostly virtually from distance.

Apart from urban planning, he said to have a great enthusiasm for music and art, having played guitar and bass guitar for many years, including the guitar he built himself! One of his favorites is Led Zeppelin.

Let’s see more about Lorenzo’s research interests!

What is the research area of your PhD studies? How does it associate with smart cities?

The research area falls within the Dept. of Engineering for Innovation, specifically within the Management Engineering area of the University of Salento.

The framework involves the study and definition of a new techno-organisational model of the ‘Interactive City‘, understood as a smart city/community model, based on an ecosystem of dynamic clusters adopting digital technologies and data to support decision-making and improve the quality of life.

It is combined with smart cities as it picks up some of the concepts of the six dimensions of the smart city, proposed as an evolution from a technology-driven approach to a human-centred one, with a focus on innovative technologies and Artificial Intelligence algorithms.

How are you planning to do your research?

I have just started the second year of my PhD. During the first year I completed the following main activities (not limited to those): context analysis, Bibliometric Analysis and Systematic Literature Review on the specific topic, and its updating, the definition of the research questions, etc.

In the upcoming months, I plan to start the following activities (again, not limited to those): identification and conduction of the specific case study, focus groups, data collection phase, building the taxonomy of the interactive city, structure of the new Interactive City techno-organisational model, scientific publication – one or more – in a Journal or an International Conference, to be planned and agreed between parties, and more.

What attracts you to those topics?

As a Landscape Architect and Urban Planner, I have always been passionate and interested in cities and in dynamics of urban and spatial issues.

Moreover, with a focus on community behaviour and different strategic projects that can be implemented to improve the livability of spaces and increase the quality of life, through new technologies and methodologies, such as GIS, DIM/LIM understood as District Information Modelling and Landscape Information Modelling, sensors. With a particular focus on environmental and climate change related issues, concerning sustainability and resilience spheres.

What is the value you expect to get from FinEst Centre? What kind of expectations and goals have you set for yourself?

My goal is to expand my knowledge in the city dynamics, urban spaces and specific fields, adopting innovative software and working methodologies also to meet European and international goals.

Some other expectations include obtaining a new way to implement skills in a stimulating working environment with a high international and innovative experience; share knowledge and explore new horizons for future cities in the digital era, towards a new city-model: the interactive city.

I would like to put my skills at the FinEst Centre’s team disposal, to contribute to shared research areas, to work together on innovative projects, for cities and communities, to be able to converge digital skills and tools towards a shared goal, writing papers that could bring innovativeness and new visions to the specific scientific field of research.

I am really glad for this opportunity to grow up working together and I look forward to meeting the FinEst team!

How did you find or hear about the FinEst Centre in Estonia?

Through “a friend of a friend” of mine, who spoke very positively of the FinEst Centre for Smart Cities in Tallinn, with a team of researchers who are highly experienced in the context of cities, and subsequently also including the landscape. This is an area I have always been fascinated by.
